This crossplane crankshaft on the new R1 has really shown a general lack of understanding and ability to write up CLEAR tech articles about bikes. Most folks are skipping through the big words in the mags and getting "big bang" and "crossplane" out of it. I see all around those two getting put together, many folks now think the R1 has this new big bang engine! Guys are saying, I rode the new R1 and it studdered and was hard to take off, cause of the new big bang engine....Well since the phrase is simple and easy to remember, what did you expect? What needed to be written is that the "big bang" must be big crapo if crossplane kicks its ass so well. Why in all these years of trying to eliminate vibration/shaking and get the engines balanced, didn't this happen long ago? Was it that hard to design exhaust and fuel systems that would work on a smooth, one at a time basis? I think most of the problem is --sugar coating you mag writers do so well-- of the big bang design--no one wants to stand up and say, another idea from the dark ages.
