Hey there, great to hear you're interested. IMHO, this is the best way to get into riding:

1. First things first, take the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) course. Look for courses near you by visiting their site: http://www.msf-usa.org/

They'll give you a bike to ride and a helmet. You just bring yourself, long pants, long-sleeved shirt, boots that cover your ankle, and the capacity to learn. They'll teach you how to change gears, which is pretty much necessary unless you plan to ride a scooter.

2. Visit motorcycle shops, sit on a lot of bikes to figure out which ones suit your height, riding style and the type of riding you'll most likely use the bike for. Bikes break down into a few categories, including: Sportbike, cruiser, standard, sport touring. And each has unique ergonomics ideal for a different kind of primary use.

3. There are actually plenty of forum threads made just for answering new-rider q's like yours, like this one: http://www.sportbikers.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4390

Good luck.
