I have a 2004 2000 Vulcan and it's been in the shop over the past 3 years for roughly 1 year under warranty. The problem, per the mechanic, is the HDL's. I've read many forums that Kawasaki and their engines are supposed to sound like a gatlin gun from WWI. My dealer has come close to tears over this bike, the mechanic has quit 3 times also because of this bike. GE will not assist in doing the right thing and buy the bike back, and Kawasaki is admittingly running out of solutions. The bike has been in the shop 8 times for a tick, similar to valve knock. After the 4th visit I've tried to just "ride it out". Big mistake! It sounded like the rockers of a very out of tune Kenworth Semi-truck. I rode like that for a week, WITH earplugs. All the dealer has done is replace HDL after HDL. NOW Kawasaki told the dealer to drill into the engine to get a reading on the oil pressure to the lifters. I feel screwed. I was just curious if you've come across this, and if so could you comfort me with a hug and help me put this nightmare to rest.

I had a gremlin just like this pop up when I last worked as a Kaw service manager - a very long time ago. It was a rare manufacturing defect. Too much cam end play. The cam was slapping back and forth between the bearing caps. The home office had me tear down the engine and trans three times - snipe hunting via telephone. Not their fault. I eventually found it with a stethoscope, some luck, and by applying side force to the cam while the engine was running. Kaw needs to bring your bike in-house for a look see or get a tech specialist out to the dealer if they want any hope of finding the culprit. Or just replace the bike. Don't you have lemon laws where you live?
