i was excited when i saw that this retro mag was comming out as advertized in motorcyclist, i haddent seen one and came to this web site looking to subscribe. now i see its been cancled along with the honda hoot and other rallys and runs just because the economic turn down may effect them. but isnt canceling these things preemptively going to hurt our sport and the economy by taking some of the fun out of it.
unfortunatly the stale media, high priced motorcycle industry and doom sayers are going to drive this sport underground again. too bad cause alot of good came out of this motorcycle fad, but ill still be riding. the one good thing is i wont have to share my love of motorcycles with the rich posers and alot of used bikes will flood the market dropping prices.so please thank who ever was in charge of canceling retro for helping that happen.

Not exactly sure what to say here, folks, especially about Mr. Backus's supposed "excitement" when we launched the original Retro last spring. Backus and his lawyer cronies at Ogden Publishing sent us a cease and desist letter with regard to our first name choice at the time - Motorcyclist Classic. Although it was an offshoot of our Motorcyclist title, which has been around for nearly 100 years, they felt we'd gotten a little too close to their title, which uses the generic "motorcycle" and "classics" terms in unison. What that was, really, was a veiled attempt to crush competition before it started, which I found disgusting. Of course, changing the name didn't hurt us, and we did what we did, eventully selling as many first and second issues as their magazine sells - all right out of the box. That's a primary reason it's so sad to see the money guys at Source back off the project as they have. Of course, it opens up a wonderful opportunity for me, which I intend to follow through on shortly. So again, if any of you Retro fans haven't sent me an email so I can let you know when Retro returns to the market, please do at mcretro@cox.net.

Hope you're all well,

Mitch,
Just hearing that the Retro has been back burnered.  Definitely sorry to hear that.
Tell the money guys that they are losing a confirmed subscriber and that the "parent" mag may lose a 40 year reader/subscriber as well.

You've gotta be KIDDING me?  The first magazine in years that I've really been excited about
is DOA and I haven't even had a chance to say AWESOME!?  I was looking forward to more issues but those pesky Bean Counters previal.
My first motorcycle was a Honda XR-75. I think there are pictures (slides!) of me on it somewhere at the folk's house in a closet.  In the late 70's I rode a '72 Honda CL-100. My first street bike was a 1983 Honda Nighthawk 650, and first literbike was a 1985 Yamaha FJ1100. Rode a '93 ZX-11D1 for seven years, then a Kawi ZRX-1100. About 5 years ago I restored and now ride a 1984 Honda V65 Magna.  I have boxes of old back issues of MotorCylist, CYCLE, CW, etc in storage. Would love to have a CX650 Turbo as well someday.  Yep, I was really looking forward to more issues of Retro.

Mitch, I hope you get Retro back on the shelves soon!

Mitch,

Look forward to your new issue.  Please do keep us informed on progress.  I sent you an email that may help out with a first artical.  I will attach at the bottom in case you did not see it.

I have tried your web site,  www.motocycleretro.com and did not find your site?  Is it up and active?

{Mitch, First let me thank you for making a great magazine.

I stumbled on it by chance and have asked a couple of local dealers here in St.Louis to make sure they get it in.

Your article on The First XR 75 about brought a tear to my eye.

Two things, First, I have not been able to successfully track down the first two issues.  Can you please post a link on the Motorcyclist web site where they can be purchased.  I know there are several people that I have talked to that are interested in obtaining them.  Paper, not digital.  (also, there is no direct link on the Motorcyclist web site, and there really needs to be.  One of the magazine stores here in town pulled up your website and argued with me that I was mistaken on the existence of your new magazine because they could not find a link).

Second, There is a website I have been following for a long time of a guy that rebuilds and makes stock and factory works replicas of 70's Honda CR 125's.   In the same vein as the article on Extreme XR's.  He sells them internationally on Ebay and has the best Retro site on the web.  http://www.vintagefactory.com  Would make a great article and I have been dying to see the inside of his shop and where he gets these parts to build such nice bikes.   I really hope that this new venture of yours takes off.  Let me just say, Pictures, Pictures, Pictures.  Cant get enough of those old bikes, street and dirt.  I would also love to see some reprints of old article's in the magazine with added new commentary now looking back. Great stuff.   Thanks Ben}

Hey guys, anyone know of any other good retro websites?

Thanks and  dont let the thread stop, this is how we can show support.  Ben.

Ben-Jamin,

Go backwards 17 posts from yours, and you'll find out where to back order the FIRST, SECOND, and THIRD issues from.   If they still have them!  I left these guide lines a couple of weeks ago.

                           Good luck,            Mike

Since I am optimistic, How about a more in depth story on the guys that rode from Tennesee to Oregon on the 70's bikes?

Mike,

You Rock.  Very nice, they do have some and I have mine on the way.  Lets not give up yet.  They any see the error of thier ways.  Or Mitch may save us.  By the way, can you imagine how many they would have sold if they would have had split the header of the main web page to have Motorcyclist Retro on one side?  If they would have put a three by five card advertizing the magazine in every issue of Motorcyclist?  They really didnt even try and it was a success.  Imagine if they had really pushed it.  They may still see that.  Ben.

Face cam and all.

I also looked forward to subs on the 3rd issue as everyone did,  I'm also certain that Mitch has a plan "B" in his arsenal of applications,I believe he will see this mag reach top sales" (because of this unexpected contingency,) and we will all share a small grin' while we read the mag of our   choice.  Get'm Mitch..

GOOD, GOOD NEWS,

I received an e-mail from Mitch today notifying me, AND NOW ALL OF YOU, that he is now presently taking subscriptions for the FIRST ISSUE of the new "MOTORCYCLE RETRO".  $39.99 for four magazines a year.   First issue in May 2009.

It's now time to "PUT UP OR SHUT UP" and help MITCH, and ourselves, get this GREAT NEW MAGAZINE going.  Mitch listed the e-mail address in his past posts to send your e-mail address to, so he can notify you, like he did me today.  Scroll back and find his post and e-mail address, and he will contact you TOO!

My check is going in the mail today!

                           Mike
