If you are longing for an adventure on the coast of North Carolina, there is none better than going two wheels through the souther outer banks! I must admit that I had a leg-up on most of you with this run, seeing as how I lived in Havelock, NC for three years. I will admit that this is one of my favorite runs of all-time, so kudos to you southerners.
First, find your way to the shipping port of Morehead City, NC, and ride across the Bogue Sound Bridge to Atlantic Beach, to check out the historic Civil War site of Fort Macon. Stop at BT’s for a cold one and a sandwich, and then head south on Route 58, through the vacation homes and townshouses of Atlantic Beach. Continue through Pine Knoll Shores as you honk and wave at beautiful babes in bikinis on bicycles as you head down through Emerald Isle, and experience a coast line that is untouched by modern commercialization. Stop at one of the local piers to see what’s biting, and you might be able to get a bargain on some of the local flounder, that is popular during the summer months.
Head back across the sound and take a left on Route 24 South, and head towards Wilmington. You will cross through the fishing town of Swansboro on your way to Camp Lejuene, North Carolina, home of the United States Marines Corps. Although you will be unable to access Camp Lejeune without the proper identification, you will be able to meet and greet with the Marines at any local restaurant, and there are monuments throughout the city honoring the Marines that have served from this station.
In Jacksonville, NC, you can jump on Route 17 North and head back to colonial New Bern, where you can hang-out with the nautical folk and the boats that have found their way to port. Continue on 17 and find Route 70, which will take you through the pine forest and back into Morehead City. Along the way, make sure you pay tribute to the Marines at Air Station Cherry Point, as you pass many replica aircraft on your way back to the coast. Make sure you stop at Chopper Toyz (5243B Hwy 70 West) and pick up anything from parts and accessories, to helmets and leather.
At the end of a long day, have a great meal at Raps Sports Bar and Grill in Morehead City, or check out the local nightlife at Midnight Rodeo.
Whether it’s the ride, the unbelievable views, or the southern hospitality, this quick but unforgettable journey will bring you back again and again. Enjoy the Ride.
