I have an 87 Sportster with a 1000 cc engine (tired of all the oil leaks)and a 97 Buell with a 1200 cc engine (that has never leaked oil). Would like to take the Buell engine and put it in the Sporty and make a real mean machine. I've been told by several of my friends that this can be done, even the guys at the Harley shop said it could be done. I'm ready to tackle the job, but want/need just a little more assurance. So if there is any of you bikers out there that have done this, or know if it will work please let me hear from you.

No info to share but it sounds like a great project. I see money in that for others

Why bother changing engine from a good running Buelle, unless the Buelle has been crashed, would it not be better to find a spare Buelle engine and then modify the 87 Sporters to take the Buelle, or better still rebiuld the 87 sportster so it seals properly?
When I am to old to ride , just dig the hole

The Buell runs GREAT, is a mean machine and has never been been on it's side. I don't ride it much any more and it just sits in the shed. The sportster on the other hand has had the engine rebuilt last fall, everything new on it, looks beautiful (would post a picture for you if I could)but it still leaks and I am just tired of working on it. The Buell has NEVER leaked and I've never had to work on it except for the general maintaince.
I don't really want to spend $$$ on a engine that I don't know anything about especially from a bike that has been crashed and I sure can't afford a new one.
