I'm looking for a standard that leans more towards sport but still comfortable for long rides. I've been riding some form of dirt or street bike for over 25 years. I average about 6000 miles a year and use my bikes mainly for commuting on back twisty roads. I've narrowed my search to the: Ducati Monster S2R 1000, KTM Super Duke 990, BMW R1200R and have thought about the Moto Guzzi Griso. I have ridden the Monster and BMW and like the performance and character of the Ducati and appreciate the comfort and roominess of the BMW but would probably modify the Duc for more comfort and choose that over the R. Any advice is welcome. I especially would like to hear from anyone who has ridden the Duke and Griso.

I like the bikes you mention sans the BMW. It sounds like you have it narrowed down to the Duc. I love Ducati's and wish I had one. The KTM has gotten some great reviews from this magazine. I have a soft spot for Moto Guzzi. My only concern is parts and service. They make great looking bikes. If ever I get to Italy their factory is a must tour. If I were you I would head to the forums for each bike you mentioned and see what the riders have to say. We are all loyal to our machines but I think at the same time honest about the warts. Good luck with your search. Finding that just right bike is half the fun.

It sounds like you're looking for someone to talk you into the Duc. You'll love an S2R1000 ---the air-cooled DS1000 motor is my favorite Ducati motor, ever.
