I think the Ninja 250R is a great starter bike. It handles well, its light and you'll learn a lot riding it. It also gets about 70 mpg. Best part? You can fall down a few times on it (we all fall when we're learning), and still sell it for nearly what you paid for it.

+1 on what PGAWest says. You can hone your skills on the ninja 250. Keep an eye out for a used one. Save some money. I see them pop up on my local Craigs List all the time. Let us know how things turn out.

Perfect first bike, and not bad even when you're experienced. Handles nicely, forgiving, yet lots of fun. Low insurance and gas costs, best choice all the way. Don't listen to the person who says that everyone falls or anyone who says crashing is part of riding. Take an MSF course, start out with a smart bike like the N 250 and learn at your own pace. Nobody ever HAS to crash.
