From a Nationwide press release:
The return of Daytona Bike Week signals the start of long-distance touring season - and the need for reviewing insurance coverage
Columbus, Ohio - This March more half a million motorcycle enthusiasts will journey to Florida to enjoy the 66th annual Daytona Bike Week. From customized cruisers and loaded-down tourers to motorcycle trailer-towing rigs, motorcyclists from across the country will choose this event as their first major trek of the riding season. But before heading to the Sunshine State - or embarking on any long-distance ride, for that matter - the motorcycle insurance experts at Nationwide remind bike owners that existing insurance coverage should be fully tuned to the rigors of a road trip.
"Responsible riders always make safety a top priority by planning ahead," says Mitch Roggemann, national sales director for Nationwide's Property & Casualty Specialty Products. "However, sometimes no amount of planning can prevent a mechanical failure or unexpected trip interruption. That's why the return of spring riding season is an excellent time to evaluate just which contingencies your current policy really covers." Unexpected hassles can range from costly breakdowns that require towing and unplanned hotel stays to bike theft and accident damage. All of them, advises Roggemann, can be easier to bear if owners fully understand what's covered - and what's not.
Policies may differ, but Nationwide Insurance offers the following five tips for riders planning their return to the road this spring:
. Before you start logging miles, be sure your policy is updated to include any custom work added to your bike in the off-season. For example, exotic exhausts, chrome plating, and carbon fiber are costly upgrades.
. Whether near or far from home, breakdowns are always a hassle. Your policy should cover the reasonable cost of towing to a qualified repair facility.
. Be sure your coverage includes reimbursement for lodging, transportation, and meals if you are stranded due to an accident or breakdown. Nationwide provides generous roadside assistance - up to $400 for lodging, transportation and meals -- for riders in unexpected situations
. Many motorcycling enthusiasts choose to trailer bikes to their final destination, particularly if they are customized or vintage rides. Make sure your policy is written to include transport trailer coverage.
. Always ride responsibly. Most policies will not cover damage incurred if the driver is engaged in a speed or stunting contest - so steer clear of nose wheelies down Main Street. Only highly specialized policies cover racers and stunt performers.
