Hey im planning a trip from northern california to the Magellan straits, or as far south in south america as posssible. Can anyone recommend a good dual purpose bike, that is relatively cheap, definitely sturdy and highway legal in CA. Im thinking i will be carrying about 100lbs of gear and i weigh 200lbs, so maybe atleast 600cc..? Also a name brand that is prominent so that parts can be found in third world countries. Also any tips for the trip. Thanks.

The Kawasaki KLR 650 comes to mind. Fairly cheap, reliable as far as I know and parts should be easy to come by. You should be able to find a good used one. You might want to check out www.advrider.com  Lots of useful info there on trips such as the one you are planning.  Good luck.

I will try to find a bike that has been sale in south America, because of the spares, and think of geting the symplest bike you can,I mean that will be better an air cooled than an water cooled, less parts for brake, less risk of brake down.I will try a XR600/650R or BMW 1150GS if you can afford it.I like very much the Honda XRV750 Africa Twin, but is water cooled.
