Lake Mattamuskeet is the largest natural lake in the state of North Carolina. It was forcibly drained in the early 1900s by commercial investors seeking to farm the rich boggy soil underneath. After three failed attempts to make money on the strange venture, the federal government purchased the property and developed a waterfowl sanctuary, complete with lodge that welcomed hunters from throughout the world. The area soon became known as the Goose Hunting Capital of the World.I mounted my 1981 BMW R100RS and sped off to see it up close. report and pictures
