Good for Alex!!!! I think he's just discovered machines in a big way. I had little interest in cars, bikes or motors till I reached 11. I haven't lost my fascination with engines yet and I'm 51.
I started riding mini-bikes at 14. My first one wasn't the usual Briggs & Stratton powered bike but a 1969 Honda Mini Trail (Z50??). Rode dirt bikes, blasting down fire trails for several years before hitting the streets....legally.
So you want to teach Alex how to ride? Start him on something small, and in the dirt. Not on a closed track, but out in the open. Where there are obsticales to avoid, varying surface conditions ranging from hard packed to soft sand to sugar sand. Let him learn to jump hills, avoid sudden obsticals and anything that nature throws at him. Let him fall and take a headder face first into the dirt. Let him make all kinds of mistakes. Let him learn. In the end he will be a better rider once he does hit the streets. He will automatically know how to avoid traffic and debris on the road. He'll know how to handle a slippery surface and dodge old ladies in big cars. I learned how ride that way. Made all my mistakes in the dirt. It also taught me how to survive on the street.
Once your wife sees how well he rides in the dirt she will be less apprehensive when he does ride on pavement. Best of luck to you and Alex.
